World Premiere Recording of Dieter Ammann's Piano Concerto Earns Outstanding Critical Acclaim
Jan. 01, 2021
In October 2020, BIS Records released the world premiere recording of Dieter Ammann's Piano Concerto - Gran Toccata, performed by Andreas Haefliger with the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Susanna Mälkki. Andreas Haefliger premiered the concerto at the 2019 BBC Proms with the BBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sakari Oramo and performed the work again in Boston, Munich, and Helsinki, where the recording was made, all under the baton of Susanna Mälkki. Haefliger recalls:
"Little could have prepared me for the exceptional work I was to receive [from Dieter Ammann] The Piano Concerto – Gran Toccata. Keeping tradition close by as an ally in the layering of harmony and rhythm, it explodes into futuristic visions in an extremely personal language and, through its kaleidoscopic colors and pianistic virtuosity, reinvents the genre for the 21st century."
This world premiere recording has garnered excellent reviews from Gramophone, BBC Music Magazine, and many others. Concerto calls the composition "mesmeric" and raves:
"Swiss composer Dieter Ammann delivers a rollercoaster ride of incredible rhythmic energy...[The Piano Concerto – Gran Toccata] is a piece packed full of memorable musical incident, ranging from the hypnotic slow pulsing repeated notes at the opening and throbbing almost jazz-inflected at the close to the subterranean sounds of a mystic chorale in a rare moment of lyric contemplation..."
