New Publication: Oliver Knussen's Metamorphosis for Solo Bassoon
Dec. 01, 2020

On December 16, Faber Music will release a new publication: Oliver Knussen's Metamorphosis. Written for solo bassoon, Oliver Knussen penned Metamorphosis in the early 1970s before subsequently withdrawing it. His original plan was to expand it into a more substantial work inspired by the Kafka novella of the same name. In 2018, the work was revised for inclusion in a concert celebrating the Sacher Foundation’s acquisition of the composer’s manuscripts. The extensive revisions include elaborated melodic lines, a more precise notation of pitch, and less extreme dynamic markings.
The composer noted:
"Written at the request of the bassoonist Vincent Ellin for his recital at New England Conservatory in Boston, April 1972, the present version is dedicated to the memory of my dear friend of 40 years, the composer Alan Stout (1932-2018).
