New Krenek CD Released on Capriccio

Ernst Krenek's String Quartets Nos. 3 and 5 have been released in a new recording by the Petersen Quartett on Capriccio Records. This is the second recording the Petersen Quartett have made of Krenek string quartets since their 2003 Capriccio release of Krenek's String Quartets Nos. 1 and 7.

The first seven string quartets span a fertile and variegated time in Krenek's compositional life, spanning from 1924 to 1944 (his final String Quartet, No. 8, was composed much later, in 1981). Within this time span, Krenek's music developed from a late Romantic aesthetic, to a Stravinsky-influenced neo-classical style, to twelve-tone serialism; and each of the string quartets occupies a unique space in Krenek's oeuvre.
