New Edition of Leoš Janáček's The Makropulos Case at The Vienna State Opera
Nov. 23, 2015

The Vienna State Opera continues its Janáček cycle with the premiere of a new production of The Makropulos Case on December 13, using the newly revised edition published by Universal Edition and edited by Jirí Zahrádka. The production, starring Laura Aikin in the role of Emilia Marty, is directed by Peter Stein and conducted by Jakub Hrůša.
Utilizing the autograph full score as well as three versions made under the composer’s supervision, the new edition of The Makropulos Case incorporates all surviving sources for the first time and restores many of Janáček’s original intentions (including special instruments such as viola d’amore, childrens drum and five-stringed double bass) to the material. In addition, the new edition includes valuable notes on practical performance by the renowned Janáček conductor Sir Charles Mackerras.
