New Chamber Version of Douglas J. Cuomo and John Patrick Shanley's Doubt Premiered by Opera Parallèle
May. 30, 2026
The world premiere performances of Douglas J. Cuomo and John Patrick Shanley's opera, Doubt, featuring an abridged libretto by Kevin Newburry, take place this week in San Francisco. The Opera Parallèle production, led by conductor Nicole Paiement and stage director & concept designer Brian Staufenbiel is in repertory from May 29-31 at the Presidio Theatre in San Francisco. Composer Douglas J. Cuomo explains the evolution of his opera:
"This new and more intimate version of Doubt is lean and cut close to the bone. Both the cast and orchestra size have been substantially reduced. The four principal roles remain the same as in the larger version, but both the children’s and adult choruses have been eliminated, and the instrumental forces are now a Britten-sized 14.
With these changes come a more intensely focused emotional and visceral theatrical experience. The elimination of the choruses not only reduces the size of the production, but musically and visually illuminates one of the most important themes of the story. Now onstage you will see one man, sure of his power and his dominant place in the school and the church, in a battle against the women of those institutions who are confronting him. This numerical imbalance (favoring the women), and its inverted power imbalance (favoring Flynn), draws into sharp relief the unfolding conflict between the priest, confident in what he regards as his naturally occurring and well-deserved place of dominance in the world, and the women who are challenging him.
Though set in a Bronx Catholic school in 1964, Doubt traces a tale that is universal and contemporary. Gender politics, race relations, abuse scandals within the church; questions about personal responsibility, right and wrong, blind certainty and repressed doubt, are all intertwined. Each character grapples with their own disquieting feelings that arise unbidden, as the cultural and moral ground beneath them begins to shift, opening a chasm of the unknown beneath them."
