Musica non grata Presents Franz Schreker’s Der ferne Klang in Prague
Mar. 10, 2022
Musica non grata presents Franz Schreker’s Der ferne Klang at the State Opera House in Prague from March 20-April 10. As the title indicates, Musica non grata focuses on "unwelcome music," creators silenced by the Nazi regime, many of whom were pushed to the margins of society, hounded or even murdered. Musica non grata's new production of Die ferne Klang is conducted by Karl-Heinz Steffens and directed by Timofey Kulyabin who notes:
“In this production of Der ferne Klang, the story takes place in a contemporary modern European city. Fritz is a well-known conservatory professor with an ambition to compose music, and Grete is a young girl from a poor neighborhood and also his student and mistress. As in Schreker's libretto, we witness three meetings and breakups of a loving couple. Years pass between the acts. However, my production is not so much about the nature of romantic love and the delusion of romantic illusions as it is about the nature and rights of talent with an emphasis on the position of women in the world of musical composition, which men dominate."
Alexander Zemlinsky gave the Czech premiere of Der ferne Klang on May 20, 1920. Der ferne Klang is now returning to Prague more than a century after its Czech premiere.
