Mozart's Requiem in a New Completion by Masato Suzuki
Feb. 01, 2019
The revised and completed edition of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Requiem by renowned composer, conductor, and keyboard player, Masato Suzuki, was released on January 30, 2019. Materials for performance have been available on hire since April, 2017.
The complete edition of the Requiem by Süßmayr, based on Mozart’s autograph manuscript, has been performed countless times and continues to be an invaluable historical reference in tracing Mozart’s intentions. Nevertheless, it cannot be denied that there are various problems with that edition, and particularly in recent years, several attempts have been made to revise the arrangement.
Requiem, completed and edited by Suzuki (2013/17) is one of these attempts. In this revised edition, based on Süßmayr’s complete and revised edition, "Amen", based on the sketch of the Amen fugue discovered in 1960, is added after the "Lacrymosa". Additionally, the two main difference in this edition as compared to others are the incorporation of the orchestration made by Eybler, a student of Mozart, prior to that of Süßmayr, and the return to and the reexamining of the first edition published by Breitkopf & Härtel in Leipzig in 1800.
As Suzuki states, "the purpose of this revised edition is entirely to search for further possibilities in performance, and it was not created to be the final edition, either from an academic point of view or from a practical, performance standpoint. With the release of this edition, we hope that new possibilities in the performance history of Mozart’s Requiem will be rediscovered."
