Morton Subotnick Featured at Iceland's Raflost Festival

Apr. 29, 2008

This month Morton Subotnick appears as the featured guest composer at Iceland's Raflost Festival, an annual arts festival of electronic media. As part of his Icelandic visit, Subotnick will give a lecture at the Iceland Academy of the Arts on April 25 and his works The Other Piano, for piano and live electronics, and Until Spring Revisited, for solo live electronics, will be performed on May 1. Premiered by Vicki Ray in 2007, The Other Piano features real time sound processing of live piano music in surround sound. The work is coming off a successful performance at San Francisco's Other Minds Festival that the San Francisco Classical Voice called "heavenly."

A pioneering composer in the development of electronic music and an innovator in works involving instruments and other media, Morton Subotnick also played an essential role in the development of the electronic ghost box: an electronic device consisting of a pitch and envelope follower for a live signal with an amplifier, frequency shifter and ring modulator. His pioneering works for electronic ghost and live performers published by Schott Music include: LiquidStrata for piano, The Wild Beasts for trombone and piano, Axolotl for solo cello, and A Fluttering of Wings for string quartet.
