New Production of Mauricio Kagel's Staatstheater at Theater Bonn
Oct. 01, 2020
Theater Bonn opened a new production on September 13, 2020 of Mauricio Kagel's Staatstheater, directed by Jürgen R. Weber and conducted by Daniel Johannes Mayr. When Staatstheater premiered in 1971, critic Heinz Josef Herbort wrote “Will Kagel’s ‘Staatstheater’ become a standard of musical theatre? The cast is variable, so even provincial theatres should be able to produce it. That it is one of the most important works of post-war musical theatre and, even more so, one of the most necessary, is without question.” It is a powerful work, so much so, that in 1971, the Hamburgische Staatsoper had to be placed under police protection because of bomb threats following the premiere of the work. Theater Bonn's production, originally scheduled to premiere in April 2020 was postponed due to COVID-19, but fortunately salvaged and presented this season. Learn more about the production here.
