Matthew Hindson's <em>The Returned Soldier</em> Debuts with Phoenix Symphony Orchestra

The Phoenix Symphony Orchestra performs the world premiere of Matthew Hindson’s The Returned Soldier: Symphony No. 3, on March 28 and 29 in Phoenix, Arizona.

Commissioned by the Phoenix Symphony Orchestra, The Returned Soldier takes as its departure the effects and symptoms of post-traumatic stress. For inspiration, Hindson only had to look to his own family, with several generations affected by the trauma of war. The Returned Soldier seeks to explore the inner turmoil of these veterans, and to evoke the traumatic imagery that haunts them:

In writing The Returned Soldier, my starting points were images and scenarios faced by the veterans of these (and other) wars, and the effects upon their families and loved ones. Memories of violence, of unimaginable terror, of having performed brutal acts upon other human beings in the service of helping us to live a better life.

Michael Christie conducts the program, which takes place at Phoenix Symphony Hall. Following the premiere, the orchestra brings the program to the Yavapai College Performing Arts Center in Prescott, Arizona for a performance on March 30.
