Mark-Anthony Turnage's <em>Greek</em> at the Boston Lyric Opera

Mark-Anthony Turnage’s raucous operatic take on the Oedipus myth, Greek, receives a new production this month at the Boston Lyric Opera, opening November 16 as part of the BLO’s Opera Annex series. The production stars baritone Marcus Farnsworth, reprising the leading role he sang to acclaim at Music Theatre Wales in 2011, alongside Caroline Worra, Amanda Crider, and Christopher Burchett. Andrew Bisantz conducts the ensemble with direction by Sam Helfrich.

Turnage’s opera, based on the stage play by Steven Berkoff, transports the mythological tale to London’s East End of the 1980’s. The score deftly enhances the vitality and turbulence of the text with its infusion of jazz and rock. Originally commissioned for the 1988 Munich Biennale, Greek put Turnage on the map, with the many productions that followed quickly establishing his international reputation.

Boston Lyric Opera’s production takes place at the Emerson / Paramount Center, with performances on November 16, 17, 19 and 20.
