Mark-Anthony Turnage Begins Residency at Chicago Symphony Orchestra
Oct. 01, 2006

The Chicago Symphony Orchestra begins its 2006-2007 MusicNOW series under the direction of Mead Composer-in-Residence Mark-Anthony Turnage. As part of his residency, Turnage will have individual works programmed on the orchestra's main subscription series as well as oversee two MusicNOW concerts per season.
Turnage's first programmed concert for the MusicNOW series will take place on October 23, where he will also feature as the curator. The program features the American premiere of Hans Werner Henze's Whispers of Heavenly Death, a delicately crafted setting of texts from the Walt Whitman poem of the same name, as well as Turnage's work for solo cello and ensemble Kai. The concert features soprano Tony Arnold and cellist Katinka Kleijn, with Cliff Colnot conducting. Up next for Turnage in Chicago will be the orchestra's premiere of his From All Sides, a Chicago Symphony Orchestra commission.
Mark-Anthony Turnage and Osvaldo Golijov assume the roles of Mead Composers-in-Residence from Augusta Read Thomas. Turnage's previous residencies have included those with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the English National Opera, and the London Philharmonic.
