Apr. 20, 2026
On March 28, Marcel Chyrzyński's latest piece, inspired by the state of California, was aptly premiered in Los Angeles. The composer drew musical inspiration from his numerous trips to the city, beginning in 2017. The title of the piece – Death Valley – refers to the hottest, driest, and lowest place in North America, California's Death Valley. The work was premiered by Antonina Styczeń (flute), Jan Kalinowski (cello), Marek Szlezer (piano), and David C. Lee (percussion) at the University of Southern California. The concert also featured Chyrzyński's deeply moving composition 9/11 Elegy for cello and piano, a tribute to the victims of the September 11, 2001, composed on the 20th anniversary of the attacks in New York. The elegy expresses emotions related to trauma, loss, and memory that remains alive despite the passage of time.
