Mahler's 'Tenth': A Rediscovery After Ninety-Five Years

A rediscovery has been made after a period of ninety-five years: Willem Mengelberg, a close friend of Gustav Mahler who devoted himself intensively to the cultivation of Mahler’s compositions as the chief conductor of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, presented his version of the unfinished ‘Tenth’ as the Symphony No. 10 – Adagio und Purgatorio in Amsterdam in 1924. Now, Schott Music has published the material of this version making it available for performances by orchestras for the first time. Jaap van Zweden will conduct the second ever performance of the work on December 13 in Hong Kong with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra with an additional performance on December 14, and in two concerts with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam in January 2020. The US premiere of this version of Mahler's 'Tenth' remains available. To view the score, click here.
