"Ligeti in Wonderland" at London's Southbank Centre

The music of György Ligeti takes center stage all day, every day from May 11-13 at the Southbank Centre in London. The “Ligeti in Wonderland” series begins with a special in-depth introduction (aptly titled, “What You Need to Know”) to Ligeti’s music on May 5, led by a team of experts. These include music critic and writer Paul Griffiths OBE (author of "Modern Music and After" and the 1983 biography "György Ligeti"), pianist Joseph Havlat, and Richard Steinitz OBE, the founder and longtime artistic director of the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival and writer of the 2003 biography "György Ligeti: Music of the Imagination."

Highlights of the “Wonderland” series include Six Bagatelles for wind quintet, Sonata for solo viola, and 10 Pieces for wind quintet, performed by musicians from the Royal College of Music, the Trio for violin, horn and piano, performed by Patricia Kopatchinskaja, violin, Marie-Luise Neunecker, horn, and Pierre-Laurent Aimard, piano, the complete Études, performed by Aimard, and even a concert for children and families featuring Ligeti’s Concert românesc (Romanian Concerto). The series culminates on May 13, when the Aurora Orchestra, led by Nicholas Collon, performs Ligeti’s Chamber Concerto, Piano Concerto, Hamburgisches Konzert (Horn Concerto), and Violin Concerto with Kopatchinskaja, Neunecker, and Aimard as soloists.
