Lee Hoiby's <em>After Eden</em> at the Virginia Arts Festival; <em>This Is the Rill Speaking</em> at Austin Peay State University

On April 9 and 10, the Virginia Arts Festival presents “Spring for Dance,” featuring Lee Hoiby’s After Eden in performances by the Richmond Ballet and the Virginia Symphony. Commissioned by the former Harkness Ballet of New York, the 17-minute "Orchestral Suite in Five Pas de deux" premiered in 1966. 

On April 23 and 24, Austin Peay State University presents the composer’s one-act opera This Is the Rill Speaking. The 50-minute work features a libretto by Mark Shulgasser, based on the Lanford Wilson play. The opera premiered in 2008 at the Purchase College Conservatory of Music (Purchase, NY) directed by Ned Canty and conducted by Benton Hess. 

This Is the Rill Speaking captures the everyday happenings of rural America in all of its glories and shortcomings. Like a rill, a term for a small stream or brook, the opera intermittently visits the lives of its rural inhabitants in a non-linear, fluid fashion. Such glimpses of small town life include women discussing home decorating, schoolboys gossiping about fellow students, farmers describing quality hay, and other ordinary scenes that together limn a picture of country life.
