Laura Rossi's Score to The Battle of the Somme in Performance Internationally
Jun. 01, 2016

July 1 marks the beginning of the Somme100FILM tour – an international project commemorating the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War. From July 1, 2016 through July 2017, the project plans to present 100 orchestral performances of UK composer Laura Rossi’s acclaimed live orchestral score alongside the iconic World War I silent film The Battle of the Somme. A highlight of the series is a performance by the BBC Concert Orchestra at London’s Royal Festival Hall on November 18, conducted by John Gibbons.
The Battle of the Somme, as well as Rossi’s film score for The Battle of the Ancre, are available for live to projection performance using the restored film prints available from the Imperial War Museum (IWM). The two films are stunning documentaries, comprising archive footage from these French campaigns of 1916 and 1917 respectively and originally screened in cinemas as part of the war effort.
