Lady in the Dark–Symphonic Nocturne Makes Its Comeback
May. 28, 2026
Lady in the Dark, the mold-breaking music theater work by Weill, Ira Gershwin, and Moss Hart, landed with a splash on Broadway in January 1941. Only a few months later, the film rights were gobbled up by Paramount after a bidding war had pushed the price to a then-record $285,000. “‘Astronomical’ Sum Startles Theatre Circles,” reported the New York Times. As production machinations played out, the score of Lady in the Dark as released in February 1944 bore little resemblance to Weill’s sparkling and original musical inventions. But it may have sown a seed, as the highly skilled orchestrator Robert Russell Bennett took on the arranging duties for the film. A few years later–for reasons unknown but likely related to his work on the film–Bennett created a sophisticated symphonic evolution of Weill’s themes. Premiered in July 1949 at a Lewisohn Stadium concert by the New York Philharmonic, conducted by Maurice Abravanel, this Lady in the Dark–Symphonic Nocturne entered the world in stellar fashion. Alas, it disappeared from sight over the following decades.
The Nocturne has recently been making a gradual but highly visible comeback, championed by a number of prominent conductors. Performances by Marin Alsop led the vanguard, including a 2005 recording with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra (Naxos 8.557481). The past several years have brought interpretations of the work from Robin Ticciati (with the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin) and Kirill Petrenko (Berlin Philharmonic). Petrenko’s performance is viewable with subscription to the Berlin Philharmonic’s Digital Concert Hall. A brief but tantalizing taste is presently available in an Instagram post. In just a few short weeks, James Gaffigan, the General Music Director Komische Oper Berlin and Music Director Designate of Houston Grand Opera, brings the Nocturne to the Chicago Symphony, with performances on 11, 12, and 13 June. The work can be licensed for performance in Europe by Joseph Weinberger Ltd and elsewhere in the world by European American Music Distributors Corporation.
