La La La Human Steps On Tour With New Dance Work by Gavin Bryars and Edouard Locke
Jan. 13, 2011
This month the esteemed contemporary dance troupe La La La Human Steps of Quebec premiered a new work by choreographer Edouard Lock with music by Gavin Bryars. Following their 2007 collaboration, Amjad, this new work, still unnamed, also explores and questions the idea of the baroque. Bryars and Lock are this time using Gluck’s Orphée at Eurydice and Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas as their starting point. Using just four musicians to accompany ten dancers, Bryars recomposes and weaves threads of these two composers into his own clearly identifiable style.
The work premiered at Het Muziektheater Amsterdam on January 5 and embarks on a tour that includes its North American premiere on May 5 at the Place des Arts in Quebec. The piece marks the 30th Anniversary of La La La Human Steps and features prima ballerina from American Ballet Theatre and the Kirov Ballet, Diana Vishneva, as a guest artist.
