Kurt Weill's <em>The Threepenny Opera</em> at the Atlantic Theater Company

Sixty years after Marc Blitzstein’s epoch-making English adaptation of Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht's Dreigroschenoper opened at the Theater de Lys (now the Lucille Lortel Theatre) in Greenwich Village, the Atlantic Theater Company presents a new off-Broadway production of The Threepenny Opera staged by legendary director and choreographer Martha Clarke. Creator of such works as Vienna Lusthaus and Garden of Earthly Delights, Clarke is known both for her work in dance and for her evocative theater and opera stagings. The production opens March 12 at the Linda Gross Theater in New York and runs through May 4.

The Atlantic Theater Company has assembled an all-star cast featuring F. Murray Abraham (Peachum), Lilli Cooper (Lucy Brown), Rick Holmes (Tiger Brown), John Kelly (Street Singer), Sally Murphy (Jenny), Laura Osnes (Polly), Michael Park (Macheath), and Mary Beth Peil (Mrs. Peachum). Gary Fagin, who has had a long and fruitful engagement with Weill and Brecht, including several conducting credits and an edition of Happy End, directs.

Now in its 85th anniversary season, The Threepenny Opera continues to inspire new interpretations around the world, with current and upcoming productions in the United States (San Jose Stage Company, Amarillo Opera, Signature Theatre), United Kingdom (Graeae Theater Company), Germany (Schauspiel Leipzig, Schauspiel Stuttgart), and Austria (Salzburger Landestheater).

Also this month, the New York Philharmonic performs Weill’s Symphony No. 2 in a program of Weill, Gershwin, and Ravel, conducted by Jeffrey Kahane. The program takes place March 20-23 and 25 in Avery Fisher Hall.
