Jan. 05, 2016

Performances of Kurt Weill’s music return to stages around the world throughout the month of January. Street Scene opens January 23 at Theater Pforzheim (Germany), and runs through June 10. Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny appears in three productions in Germany: Volkstheater Rostock, January 8-24; and in repertory at both Theater Kiel and Theater Koblenz starting January 16. Die Dreigroschenoper (The Threepenny Opera) retains its standing as a perennial favorite with performances throughout Europe, including Finland (Kolmen Pennin Ooppera, Lappeenranta, from January 15), Germany (Stuttgart, Leipzig, Baden-Baden, Berlin, Saarbrücken), and France (L’opéra de quat’sous, Opéra éclaté, touring production). Dreigroschenoper also runs at the Theater an der Wien (Vienna, AT) in a highly anticipated production starring Angelika Kirchschlager as Mrs. Peachum and Tobias Moretti as Macheath, January 13-30.
In other Kurt Weill Foundation news, Marc Blitzstein’s Regina comes to New York; Bronx Opera gives four performances of the opera based on Lillian Hellman’s play The Little Foxes, January 16 & 17 at Lehman College (Bronx, NY) and Jan 23 & 24 at Hunter College (New York, NY).
