Kurt Weill's <em>Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny</em> at Teatro dell’Opera di Roma

This month, Teatro dell’Opera di Roma (Rome Opera) revives British director Graham Vick’s production of Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny on October 6. Vick first staged Weill and Brecht's opera in Florence at the Maggio Musicale in 1990, and twenty years have now elapsed since his last staging of the work at Opéra National of Paris in 1995. Vick promises in that time his concept has “molto cambiato” (changed quite a bit).

John Axelrod conducts and Measha Brueggergosman reprises her role as Jenny from her impressive performance in Madrid at the Teatro Real in 2010. The cast also features Brenden Gunnell as Jimmy, Iris Vermillion as Begbick, and Willard White as Trinity Moses. The production runs with six performances through October 17. In July 2016, the production travels to La Fenice in Venice as well as to the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía de Valencia in a future season.

Also this month, Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin performs Weill’s Symphony No. 2 on October 11, with Lahav Shani conducting.
