Kurt Weill's <em>Lady in the Dark</em> in Mainz

After the successful run of Lady in the Dark at Staatsoper Hannover in 2011, in a new German translation by Roman Hinze, Manuel Brug wrote in Die Welt, “We hope this intelligent and sparkling Weill gem will soon be seen in other productions.” Wish granted:  Matthias Fontheim, outgoing artistic director of the Staatstheater Mainz, has chosen Lady in the Dark as his farewell production, opening May 17. Fontheim directs and Florian Csizmadia conducts the production, which runs through July 15.

Lady in the Dark, with music by Kurt Weill, lyrics by Ira Gershwin, and book by Moss Hart, took Broadway by storm in 1941 with its cutting-edge investigation of psychotherapy and its elaborate dream sequences. The arresting Weill-Gershwin score includes such classics as “My Ship,” “The Princess of Pure Delight,” and “The Saga of Jenny.” A 1997 production at London’s National Theatre won the Evening Standard Award for Best Musical. An orchestral concert suite from Lady in Dark is also available for performance.

In addition to several repertory productions of Weill works around Germany this month (Die Dreigroschenoper, The Firebrand of Florence, Mahagonny) and a production of Street Scene at Robert Schumann Hochschule in Düsseldorf, Michael Sanderling conducts Symphony No. 2 with the Dresden Philharmonie on May 24.
