Kurt Weill's <em>Street Scene</em> in new production at Staatsoper Hannover

Two years after its acclaimed production of Lady in the Dark, Staatsoper Hannover presents another of Weill’s Broadway shows. Street Scene, the culmination of Weill’s dream of creating an opera for Broadway, takes the stage in a new production directed by Bernd Mottl and conducted by Benjamin Reinters. The cast includes Ania Vegry (who portrayed the Toy Fairy in the recently issued world premiere recording of the original version of Zaubernacht) as Rose Maurrant, Brian Davis as Frank Maurrant, Brigitte Hahn as Anna Maurrant, and Ivan Tursic as Sam Kaplan. The work is performed in repertory November 2 through February 5 in Stefan Troßbach's German translation.

With a book by Elmer Rice (based on his Pulitzer Prize-winning play) and lyrics by Langston Hughes, Street Scene blends operatic arias and ensembles, show tunes and dance numbers, jazz and blues, as well as dramatic dialogue in an emotionally charged portrait of family and communal life among the multi-ethnic working-class and immigrant inhabitants of a crowded New York City tenement. Weill received the first Tony Award given to a composer in 1947 for his score of Street Scene, which won the 2008 Evening Standard Award for Best Musical for the Opera Group’s production at the Young Vic in London.
