Kurt Weill's Marie Galante In US Premiere at Opéra Français de New York
Nov. 01, 2008
Opéra Français de New York presents the U.S. Premiere of Marie Galante on November 13 in a production that showcases the fully-restored orchestral score and reconstruction of the original play by Jacques Deval. Starring internationally acclaimed soprano Isabel Bayrakdarian in the title role and conducted by Opéra Français music director Yves Abel, Marie Galante stands as a unique musical event.
The story centers on the innocent and tragic Marie, who is abducted in France and taken to South America by the lustful Captain Letuvier. The valiant heroine scorns Letuvier's advances only to find herself abandoned in a strange and exotic land. Having turned to prostitution in order to survive, Marie plans for her return to Bordeaux, but is caught in a web of deception that ultimately leads to her demise. Weill's music invokes the passion and allure of 1920s French cabaret foreshadowing the impending threat of Nazi Germany. This performance, which is in collaboration with the French Institute Alliance Française, is staged by the company's co-artistic directors Jean-Philippe Clarac and Olivier Deloeuil. OFNY presents three performances of Marie Galante on November 13, 15 and 16 at the French Institute Alliance Française in Manhattan.
