Kurt Weill’s Der Protagonist Published in Critical Edition

Dec. 01, 2006

The critical edition of Kurt Weill’s opera Der Protagonist, has been published by the Kurt Weill Foundation for Music and European American Music. A part of the celebrated Kurt Weill Edition, edited by Gunther Diehl and Jürgen Selk, this volume (Series 1, Volume 1) contains the full orchestral score of 324 pages, accompanied by an introductory essay and a separately published critical report. For the first time, the complete score of Weill’s 1925 one-act opera, based on Georg Kaiser’s play, is available for purchase.

The Kurt Weill Edition (KWE) is a long-term publishing project, the goal of which is to present all of Kurt Weill's completed musical works in new critical editions.  There has long been a pressing need for good editions of Weill's music. The KWE was established in 1992 to address this basic need. For the first time, each of the composer's completed and performable works will be presented in a form realizing the highest editorial standards and dedicated to use both by performers seeking accurate editions and scholars seeking authoritative texts.
