Krzysztof Penderecki's <em>Concerto grosso</em> at Indiana University; <em>Sonata for Violin and Piano</em> with Ensemble Pi

On December 10, Arthur Fagen leads the Indiana University Jacob’s School of Music Philharmonic Orchestra in a performance of Krzysztof Penderecki’s Concerto grosso for three celli and orchestra. The performance takes place at the University’s Musical Arts Center and features cellists Emilio Colón, Eric Kim and Peter Stumpf. The work was commissioned by the NHK Symphony Orchestra which gave its premiere in 2001 with soloists Boris Pergamenschikow, Truls Mørk and Han-Na Chang, with Charles Dutoit conducting. Following a 2013 performance of the work with the New York Philharmonic, New York Times critic Anthony Tommasini wrote of the work’s “ravishing orchestral effects”, with a finale that “shimmers with pungent harmonies and hazy textures.”

Later this month, New York’s Ensemble Pi presents a performance of Penderecki’s Sonata for Violin and Piano. The concert takes place on December 17 at Subculture, in New York City, and features violinist Airi Yoshioka with pianist Idith Meshulam–a rare opportunity to hear this important, early work of Penderecki's in New York. Penderecki’s first violin sonata was composed in Krakow in 1953, however the work was not premiered until 1990, with violinist Christiane Edinger and pianist Christoph Eschenbach.
