Krzysztof Penderecki at 80 and World Premiere of <em>La Follia</em> with Anne-Sophie Mutter

November 23 marks the 80th birthday of Krzysztof Penderecki and a constellation of events around the world mark the occasion. Hailed by the Guardian as “Poland’s greatest living composer,” Penderecki is globally recognized as one of the most critical musical influences of our time. Major concert engagements continue this fall with performances by the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the China National Symphony Orchestra, and Concerto Budapest. From November 17 through 23, The Krzysztof Penderecki Festival in Warsaw celebrates the occasion with performances of the composer’s most celebrated works by the nation’s leading ensembles and musicians.

This year also sees the opening of the newly established "European Krzysztof Penderecki Center for Music" in Luslawice, Poland. The center, which has been established and supervised by Penderecki, is a manifestation of the composer's lifetime dedication to the advancement of emerging musical talent.   

On December 14, virtuoso violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter performs the world premiere of Penderecki’s La Follia for solo violin, in recital at Carnegie Hall. Inspired by the Sarabande form of the Baroque period, La Follia utilizes Mutter’s dexterity and technical precision through an array of techniques including swift double stops, artificial harmonics, chordal passages, and more. Mutter’s recital is part of the “My Time, My Music” concert series and celebrates the 25th anniversary of her artistic partnership with pianist Lambert Orkis as well as her Carnegie Hall Recital debut.
