Korngold’s Die tote Stadt at New York City Opera
Sep. 01, 2006

Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s opera Die tote Stadt (The City of the Dead) will grace the stage at the State Theater in Lincoln Center during New York City Opera’s six performances.
With a libretto by Paul Schott (a pseudonym of the composer’s father Julius Korngold) and Erich Wolfgang Korngold, the plot of Die tote Stadt is based on the short novel Bruges-la-Morte by Georges Rodenbach. Death, hallucinations, mistaken identity and romance are set against a lush score and demanding vocal performances. The lead roles, Paul and Marietta, are sung by tenor Dan Charmandy and soprano Susan B. Anthony, respectively. George Manahan conducts and Frank Corsaro directs.
Die tote Stadt opens at the State Theater on September 24, with further performances running through October 14.
