Klangforum Wien Performs the World Premiere of Beat Furrer's Canti della tenebra

As part of its “musica viva weekend”, the Muffatwerk in Munich hosts the Klangforum Wien for the world premiere of Beat Furrer’s Canti della tenebra, for mezzo-soprano and ensemble. The performance, conducted by the composer, takes place on February 7 and features Tora Augestad as soloist.

The piece, originally premiered in 2013 as a cycle for mezzo-soprano and piano, is a setting of five texts from Italian poet Dino Campana’s “Canti orfici,” the writer’s only published set of poetry composed between 1906 and 1913. Furrer conceived of the cycle as a journey through Campana’s poetic texts. Furrer writes:

[Campana is] the archetype of an artistic destiny in the early 20th century and a pathos of squandering himself on the world... Dino Campana was perhaps the first to give expression to the fact that there is no escape, that there is no longer a utopian America. His journey is no longer a winter’s journey into a strange, enchanting country. Rather, the secret lies in quite everyday phenomena, in the wind which he describes, in the water ...

An additional performance of Canti della tenebra takes place on February 9 at the Munich Muffathalle.
