Karel Husa Turns 90!

Jun. 28, 2011

We offer our warmest congratulations to the Czech-American composer Karel Husa on the occasion of his 90th birthday! Husa will be especially fêted in his native city of Prague where his works are currently in performance as part of the dual celebration of the composer’s 90th birthday and the 200th anniversary of the Prague Conservatory. Several of his compositions have already been heard in concerts this Spring at the music festival Prager Frühling including the European premiere of his Concerto for Organ and Orchestra on April 30 with soloist Ales Barta and the Epoque Orchestra conducted by Jan Kucera.

Husa’s eventful life was above all marked by the second world war, the consequences of which forced him to take up residence in Prague and America and many locations in between. He emigrated to the USA in 1954 where he held positions for many years as esteemed conductor and professor at Cornell University and Ithaca College. Husa has been the recipient of numerous prizes including the Pulitzer Prize for his Third String Quartet (1968) and the Grawemeyer Award for his Cello Concerto (1989). In April of 2011 the composer was awarded his 12th honorary degree by the University of Florida. Previous honorary doctorates include those from the Cleveland Institute of Music, New England Conservatory, Ithaca College and many more. His works are featured prominently on over fifty recordings on record and CD.
