Songs of Freedom with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and Las Vegas Philharmonic

Nov. 23, 2015

Songs of Freedom with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and Las Vegas Philharmonic

Songs of Freedom: A Celebration of Chanukah, a brilliant arrangement of traditional holiday songs by Judith Clurman, Larry Hochman and Brian Stokes Mitchell, heralds the season with two major performances this month by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and the Las Vegas Philharmonic. On December 5 and 6, Donato Cabrera leads the Las Vegas Philharmonic and Master Singers in performances at the Las Vegas Smith Center. From December 18 to 20, Detroit’s Grosse Pointe South High School Chorus joins the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in six performances at Symphony Hall, conducted by Thomas Wilkins.

Songs of Freedom conjures the season with a cycle of beloved songs in thrilling arrangements for baritone solo, chorus and orchestra, with versions also available for chamber ensemble or piano accompaniment. James M. Johnson, CEO of the Omaha Symphony, writes that “with Songs of Freedom, orchestras and choruses across the country now have a dignified, moving, and ultimately thrilling piece of music to celebrate Chanukah.”

Details on the performances can be found at lvphil.org and dso.org.
