Joseph Schwantner's <em>Luminosity</em> On Tour Throughout the US

Joseph Schwantner’s recent work for wind ensemble, Luminosity, receives performances across the country this month during the composer’s residencies at the Kennesaw State University, Western Kentucky University and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

On February 17, David Kehler leads the Kennesaw State University Wind Ensemble in a performance of Luminosity at the Bailey Center in Kennesaw, GA. The ensemble takes the piece on the road with performances at the Davidson Arts Center in Augusta, GA on February 18 and at the College Band Director’s National Association (CBDNA) Southern Division Conference on February 19, where Schwantner is a featured guest composer. Also at the conference, the Western Kentucky University Wind Ensemble gives a performance of Schwantner’s Recoil on February 20.

Schwantner’s Luminosity tour continues with a residency and performance at the University of Louisiana on February 23. The performance takes place at the University’s Student Union Theater and is conducted by Damon S. Talley. On March 4, Schwantner joins the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Wind Ensemble for an additional performance at the Helene Zelazo Center for the Performing Arts.

Schwantner has written several works for wind ensemble and is widely recognized as a modern American master of the genre. He describes Luminosity as his “latest and most ambitious work” for the medium. Cast in three movements, Luminosity is bookended by material that exploits the wind, brass, and percussion sections, with a “mini-concerto for solo clarinet” at its center.
