Joseph Schwantner Performances and New Transcription for Wind Ensemble

With multiple performances of works by Joseph Schwantner on the horizon, 2007 continues to be a busy year for the composer. Mr. Schwantner was recently selected by the League of American Orchestras (formerly ASOL) and Meet the Composer as the composer for the second cycle of the nation’s largest commissioning consortium of orchestras. The commission is part of the enormously successful and multi-dimensional Ford Made in America program, which has given orchestras with small budgets representing all 50 United States an opportunity they would not have on their own to engage their communities with the work of established American composers of international repute. Schwantner’s commissioned work will see its world premiere by the Reno Chamber Orchestra in September 2008.

Upcoming performances of Schwantner’s work include the German based JugendBlas Orchester- Rheinland Pfalz performing his “…and the mountain’s rising nowhere…” on the 18 of August in Germany; a second round of performances of his Morning’s Embrace at the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra conducted by Leonard Slatkin, on the 26, 27 and 28 of October; Concerto for Percussion and Orchestra at the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra on the 12 of October; and his Concerto for Percussion and Wind Ensemble at the University of Toronto on November 24.

In addition to the already busy schedule of events for Mr. Schwantner, his powerful work New Morning for the World is now available in a new transcription for wind ensemble. New Morning for the World, for narrator and orchestra, was composed in 1982 under a commission from the American Telephone and Telegraph Company and honors the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a spoken text garnered from a variety of Dr. King's writings, addresses, and speeches. The full score and parts of the new transcription for wind ensemble will be available for sale through EAM’s Rental Department.
