Johannes Maria Staud's Peras in New York Premiere at the Austrian Cultural Forum

Sep. 01, 2006

The young Austrian composer Johannes Staud who was introduced to American audiences at the Tanglewood Festival this past summer with the works Black Moon, for solo bass clarinet, and vielleicht zunächst wirklich nur, for soprano and ensemble, makes another appearance on stateside programs this month. Pianist Jenny Lin performs the New York premiere of Staud's solo piano work Peras as well as his Bewegungen on her September 12 recital at the Austrian Cultural Forum. Ms. Lin introduced Peras in its US premiere at the Spoleto Festival earlier this year.

Just 32, Johannes Staud's Apeiron was commissioned by the Berlin Philharmonic and Simon Rattle in 2005 and his most recent Segue, music for violincello and orchestra was a commission from the Salzburg Festival for Mozart Year 2006. Daniel Barenboim led the premiere with Heinrich Schiff as soloist. Segue takes as its starting point Mozart's unfinished sketches for a work for cello and keyboard. In addition, Staud's Incipit III (Esquisse retouchée II) for trombone solo, string orchestra, two horns and percussion received its world premiere at the Kölner Philharmonie by the WDR Sinfonie Orchester Koln last March conducted by Lothar Zagrosek with soloist Uwe Dierksen. Looking ahead, Staud has been named the Daniel Lewis Young Composer Fellow at The Cleveland Orchestra during the 2007–08 season and will compose a new work for that orchestra which will premiere in Cleveland in 2008.
