Johannes Maria Staud’s Incipit III at Melbourne Symphony Orchestra

May. 05, 2011

The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra performed Johannes Maria Staud’s Incipit III, the final piece of a three work series, at the CUB Malthouse in Australia on May 4. Composed in 2005, the work received its premiere in 2006 by the WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne, and has since been performed by the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra. After setting Incipit for alto trombone and five instruments, and Esquisse retouchée (Incipit II) for solo trombone and bass drum, Staud completed the series by backing the trombone with the larger forces of a string orchestra with two horns and three percussionists. Staud writes on the Incipit series:

The two earlier pieces served as cartographic sketches and topographical indications, with the help of which new territory could be measured and explored, a territory changed by temporal distance and an expanded horizon of experience. Both these two pieces of source material influence the new work, but they are condensed, fractured, newly mounted. As the piece proceeds, new developments and events lead to an independent and dramatic significance completely emancipated from the source material.
