Joana Mallwitz’s Kurt Weill Album Wins Gramophone Award

Nov. 24, 2025

Kurt Weill’s 125th anniversary year has proven to be a magnet for Weill recordings, headlined by the release of the first-ever full recording of Love Life that was announced in the October edition of this E-News. The year is closing with another recording highlight.

From virtually the moment of its release in August 2024, Joana Mallwitz’s first recording on Deutsche Grammophon, with Konzerthausorchester Berlin, was hailed as an interpretive triumph. That Mallwitz chose to devote her debut entirely to Weill compositions demonstrated forcefully the place Die sieben Todsünden and Fantaisie symphonique (Symphony No. 2) have taken in the standard repertoire and made a case for Symphonie in einem Satz (Symphony No. 1) to join the canon as well.

This past month, Gramophone magazine named the disc the winner of its 2025 Orchestral Award. Wrote Gramophone’s Peter Quantrill: “It is the achievement of Joana Mallwitz to show that Symphony No. 2 in particular can take its place as a personal reinvention of the form, alongside the three-movement symphonies by Britten, Stravinsky and others, such as the Thirds of Martinů and Honegger.”
