Janáček’s The Cunning Little Vixen at the New York Philharmonic

Jun. 03, 2011

The Cunning Little Vixen, Leoš Janáček’s 1924 opera based on a comic-strip by Rudolf Tesnohlidek and Stanislav Lolek, is performed by the New York Philharmonic in a fully-staged performance on June 22, 23, 24, and 25, 2011, at Avery Fisher Hall. The production is directed by Douglas Fitch and created by Giants Are Small, who thrilled audiences and critics in 2010 with their stunning production of Ligeti’s Le Grand Macabre at the New York Philharmonic. The cast stars Isabel Bayrakdarian as the Vixen, Marie Leonormand as the Fox, choristers of the Metropolitan Opera Children’s Chorus and New York Choral Artists, and many, many more.

An opera in three acts, The Cunning Little Vixen tells the story of life in the forest, with the adventures and comic mishaps of the Vixen in a forest full of talking animals and blundering humans. Based on a popular Czech comic trip, this work includes several compositional techniques considered experimental in opera at the time of its premiere, including mime, ballet, and instrumental interludes.
