Alvin Singleton’s <em>After Fallen Crumbs</em> in Jacksonville

On February 16, 17 and 18 the Jacksonville Symphony performs Alvin Singleton’s 1987 work After Fallen Crumbs. A key orchestral work in the Singleton catalogue, After Fallen Crumbs features brilliant timpani and brass fanfares in contrast with a more reserved, minimalist orchestral palette. The composer dedicated the work to Martin Luther King, Jr. Its title derives from that of a previous Singleton composition for male choir, Fallen Crumbs, which treats the subject of world hunger with the composer's own words, "an ant can feed a family from the fallen crumbs of an elephant." The orchestral work was written in the same year and shares the musical motives and general spirit with the a cappella choral work. After Fallen Crumbs has been recorded on Elektra/Nonesuch by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra conducted by Louis Lane.
