Innova Recordings Releases Jennie Oh Brown's <em>Looking Back: Flute Music of Joseph Schwantner</em>

On September 25, Innova Recordings releases flutist Jennie Oh Brown’s new album Looking Back, featuring works for flute by Joseph Schwantner. The album is the first of two CDs being released this season which comprise Schwantner’s complete flute works. Brown’s CD includes new recordings of Silver Halo, for four flutes with guests Karin Ursin, Janice MacDonald and Susan Saylor, as well as Black Anemones, Soaring, and Looking Back, with pianist Jeffrey Panko. Album release events take place on November 2 when Brown joins pianist Kuang Hao Huang for a live broadcast performance of Looking Back on Chicago’s WFMT Radio and on November 5 and 14 with Brown’s Picosa Ensemble performing works from the album as well as Schwantner’s Taking Charge at the Mayslake Peabody Estate in Oak Brook, IL and the Merit School in Chicago.

Later this season, flutist Sarah Frisof releases a new album on Centaur Records featuring several works for flute and piano—Soaring, Looking Back, and a new arrangement of Two Poems of Agueda Pizzaro—as well as Taking Charge, for flute, piano and percussion.

Also this month, the University of South Carolina hosts Schwantner for a composer residency. Events take place September 20-21, and include a performance of Schwantner’s recent Luminosity for wind orchestra, which was commissioned by a consortium of university bands led by the CBDNA (College Band Director’s National Association).
