Hungarian State Opera Presents Zoltán Kodály's Háry János in Celebration of its 100th Anniversary

Oct. 28, 2026

Zoltán Kodály’s The Adventures of Háry János from Nagyabony to the Imperial Court was first performed in 1926. To mark the work's 100th anniversary, the Hungarian State Opera is presenting a dedicated Háry100 series.

The four-scene singspiel combines authentic Hungarian folk songs and dances with Kodály’s sensitive orchestration and a humorous, fairytale-like plot. At its centre is the old Hungarian soldier Háry János, who tells his friends of his incredible exploits: rescuing Marie Louise, becoming a hero at the Viennese court and even defeating Napoleon – before ultimately leaving all courtly honors behind and returning home to his beloved Örzse.

Kodály brings together folk music, storytelling and musical wit in a work that remains one of the most original musical stage works of the 20th century.
