Hub New Music and Hannah Lash Perform The Nature of Breaking in Livestream Concerts

Sep. 18, 2020

Ashmont Hill Chamber Music in Boston presented the virtual premiere performance of Hannah Lash's The Nature of Breaking following the cancellation of the scheduled live performance of that work on March 15 due to COVID. The Nature of Breaking was written for Hub New Music and Hannah Lash to perform together as a mixed ensemble with harp. The four-movement work, exquisitely performed by Hub New Music and the composer, explores the limitless expressive range of this new instrumentation. The composer notes that the piece:

"...uses several bits of materials developed quite thoroughly over four movements. The material is treated quite kaleidoscopically throughout. One of the bits of material is actually a fragment of a quote from the chorale which Bach harmonized - 'Es ist genug'. I've used a fragment of the first phrase of that chorale. The rest of the fragmentary material is not quotational, but original...."
