Howard Shore Feted at Hollywood in Vienna Gala in the Vienna Concert House

Sep. 07, 2010

The music of Howard Shore takes center stage on September 16 at the Vienna Concert House this month during the special film music gala Hollywood in Vienna where selections from Shore’s celebrated film music catalogue are performed by the ORF Radio Symphonie-Orchester Wien conducted by John Axelrod. Shore’s epic score to The Lord of the Rings headlines the program and is joined by the main title theme from The Fly and a medley of Shore’s classic scores to The Aviator, Big, The Fly, Ed Wood, and Eastern Promises. As part of the gala proceedings, Shore will receive the prestigious Max Steiner Film Music Achievement Award. The Max Steiner Award is just the most recent in an extensive list of awards the composer has earned throughout his illustrious career that includes three Academy Awards, four Grammys and three Golden Globes, receiving recognition in both the Best Score and Best Original Song categories. Two days prior to the event, on September 14, Howard Shore and Doug Adams, author of The Music of the Lord of the Rings Films, take part in a Film Music Symposium at the University for Music and the Dramatic Arts, Vienna alongside Rick Porras, co-producer for The Lord of the Rings, and composers Klaus Badelt, Christian Kolonovits and Wolfgang Schlögl.

Elsewhere this month, Maestro Ludwig Wicki leads performances of Howard Shore’s Return of the King Live to Projection on both sides of the Atlantic: at Virginia's Wolf Trap Performing Arts Center on September 10 and 11; and with the London Philharmonic Orchestra at Royal Festival Hall on September 28 and 29. Maestro Wicki returns to the East Coast with The Two Towers–Live to Projection in its Radio City Music Hall debut on October 8 and 9.
