High Praise for Neil Brand's The Hound of the Baskervilles

The BBC Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Timothy Brock, performed the world premiere of Neil Brand’s music for The Hound of the Baskervilles at the Barbican on December 20. The work is a new evening-length adaptation of Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic mystery for eight actors and orchestra, starring Mark Gatiss as Sherlock Holmes and Sanjeev Bhaskar as Dr. Watson.

Following the premiere, Rebecca Franks of The Times wrote:

“[Brand’s] score, effectively orchestrated by the conductor Timothy Brock, layers up atmosphere and psychological complexity. Brooding strings and baleful brass add unease and melancholy. Brand writes of being immersed in the Hammer Horror scores written by the British modernists in the 1950s; their influence is felt.”

BBC Sounds began streaming the audio of the December 20 performance of The Hound of the Baskervilles as part of its Drama on 3 series on January 22. The broadcast will be available for a limited time. Listen here.
