Hannah Lash's Requiem Debuts with Yale Choral Artists

On September 24, Jeffrey Douma leads the Yale Choral Artists, along with the Philharmonia Orchestra of Yale, in the world premiere of Hannah Lash’s Requiem at St. Mary’s Church in New Haven, CT. The work’s New York premiere follows on September 25 at Trinity Church Wall Street in Manhattan.

Set in seven movements, Lash’s Requiem is at once a highly personal and universal work, exploring themes of loss and human frailty. Lash elaborates:

My Requiem does not memorialize any one death, but is an expression of sorrow resulting from the understanding of the ephemeral nature of life, and of my deepest pain and fear about losing those dearest to me. It is about our fragility, and our tragic knowledge of this fragility. The text is a translation of the original Latin Requiem text, which I found necessary to re-imagine in my own secular language, reframing it in ways I could more fully connect to than the original or any existing translation.

On September 28, Lash (as harpist) joins mezzo-soprano Janna Baty for a recital at the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival.
