Hannah Lash's God Music Bug Music Debuts at Minnesota Orchestra Composer Institute

Hannah Lash’s newest piece for orchestra, God Music Bug Music, premiered on January 6 with the Minnesota Orchestra as part of the Minnesota Orchestra Composer Institute. Chosen as one of six featured composers for the Institute in 2012, Lash saw her premiere as part of the sixth annual Future Classics concert conducted by Osmo Vänskä. Of her new work, the composer writes:

God Music Bug Music is a piece that uses the same five-note cell in both movements, used very differently in each. In the first movement, "God Music," this cell rages in the brass before it infiltrates the rest of the orchestra, finally culminating in rhythmic unison in the whole orchestra. In "Bug Music," the motive is expressed canonically in a chamber-like setting, slowly swarming its way into all the instruments, finally reaching full saturation: a breakdown of the canonic structure into a fully chromatic cluster.

The Minnesota Orchestra Composer Institute, co-presented each season by the Minnesota Orchestra and American Composers Forum, provides the opportunity for young symphonic composers from across the country to participate in an intensive immersion into the world of a major American symphony orchestra. Now in its 11th season and directed by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Aaron Jay Kernis, the Institute ran this year from January 2 through 7.

Upcoming premieres for Lash include Octet: Selves, for violin consort, at The Tank in New York City with the Hutchins Consort East; Subtilior, Lamento by the Da Capo Chamber Players at Carnegie Hall in April; and Requiem Pro Avibus Mortuis for SATB choir with New York’s Park Avenue Christian Church Choir led by Paul Vasile.
