Hanna Kulenty's Negende verdieping Premiered as Part of the String Quartet Biennale Amsterdam at the Muziekgebouw
Jan. 30, 2026
Negende verdieping, a new work composed by Hanna Kulenty for amplified string quartet, narrator, and echo delay, was premiered on January 29 during the String Quartet Biennale Amsterdam at the Muziekgebouw. Negende verdieping was commissioned by the Chaos String Quartet within the framework of the Een flat met duizend ramen project. Haydn for modern ears as played by the Chaos String Quartet – that is the formula of Een flat met duizend ramen ("A flat with a thousand windows"). This brand-new imaginative series consists of six short performances, two per concert. Six string quartets by Haydn, new music, and texts by Joke van Leeuwen take center stage. Star actress Ariane Schluter takes on the roles of a series of characters from the here and now: all have a relationship with Haydn’s music.
Hanna Kulenty engages in dialogue with the legacy of the genre, in the form of Haydn's Sun Quartets, Op.20, interpreting the original through the prism of her own experiences, new perspectives and her own compositional technique.
