Gustavo Dudamel Leads the New York Philharmonic with Pinchas Zukerman in Performances of Oliver Knussen's Violin Concerto
Dec. 03, 2008
Oliver Knussen's Violin Concerto sees three performances by the New York Philharmonic on January 15, 16, and 20, 2009. Celebrated Venezuelan conductor, Gustavo Dudamel, who assumes the position of music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic next season, will lead the New York Philharmonic with violinist Pinchas Zukerman, for whom Knussen's Violin Concerto was commissioned and written in 2002. The concerto is cast in three interconnected movements (Recitative, Aria, Gigue). The composer comments: "At times the violinist resembles a tightrope walker, progressing along a (decidedly unstable) high wire strung across the span that separates the opening and closing sounds of the piece." In the concerto Knussen creates exquisitely rich music that is immediate, approachable, and thoroughly enjoyable, utilizing the highest register of the violin, challenging the soloist to stay on that tightrope.
