German Premiere of Leoš Janáček's <em>From the House of the Dead</em>

Oper Frankfurt presents the German premiere of the critical new edition and practical version of Leoš Janáček's opera From the House of the Dead this month with a run of performances taking place in Frankfurt through April 29. Oper Frankfurt's production is directed by David Hermann and conducted by Tito Ceccherini. The libretto, by the composer, is after Fyodor Dostoyevsky's 1862 novel, based on his experiences in prison. Of the musical-dramatic significance of the work, Oper Frankfurt's dramaturge noted:

"'A tiny flicker of God in every creature': the profound phrase which Janáček wrote at the beginning of his score, links the opera to Dostoyevsky's story. Janáček's opera, begun in February 1927 and completed in May 1928, is revolutionary in many ways. He used a radically new music language to convey the epic demands of the work. The astonishing score includes eruptive elements, piercing dissonances, laconic, short motifs, rhythmical ostinati and language as "instant photography of the soul" (Janáček)."

Meanwhile, audiences in the United States may enjoy two performances of Janáček's Taras Bulba. The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra (Christian Arming, conductor) performs the work on April 12 and 14 at Atlanta Symphony Hall and The Colorado Symphony, led by conductor Brett Mitchell, performs the work on April 13-14 at Boettcher Concert Hall.
