Gerald Barry's <em>Midday</em> Debuts with the Vogler and RTÉ Contempo String Quartets

On May 1, the Vogler Quartett and RTÉ Contempo Quartet joined forces for the world premiere of Gerald Barry’s new double-string quartet Midday as part of the second Sligo International Chamber Music Festival at St. Columba’s Church in Drumcliffe, Ireland.

Barry describes the work as “…standing still in the landscape, listening, watching, waiting…”, with an ominous performance direction at the outset of the score: “The string quartets should sit facing one another like armies in battle.”

Listen to a collection of Barry’s chamber works, including his brash and virtuosic Piano Quartet No. 1, released by NMC Recordings:

This summer, Barry’s new work for tenor and orchestra titled Canada receives its world premiere at Royal Albert Hall in London as part of the BBC Proms with tenor Allan Clayton and conductor Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla leading the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. The new work borrows text from the ‘Prisoner’s Chorus’ of Beethoven’s Fidelio.
